History

Ricky Skaggs is a Kentucky mandolin virtuoso who went from bluegrass prodigy to country star and then back to bluegrass. He was playing mandolin as a small child, and as a teenager he joined Ralph Stanley's Clinch Mountain Boys alongside Keith Whitley, learning the old mountain sound from one of its keepers. Later work with progressive bands sharpened his technique, and in the 1980s he became one of the leading figures of mainstream country music, bringing clean picking and traditional harmonies back to the radio at a time when the charts leaned toward pop. In the late 1990s he turned fully back to bluegrass, forming the band Kentucky Thunder and releasing Bluegrass Rules! and Ancient Tones, records that paid open tribute to Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers. Those albums helped lead a wider revival of traditional bluegrass at the end of the century. Skaggs is recognisable by crisp, precise mandolin breaks, a clear high tenor and a band that plays classic material with modern polish and tight, relentless drive.
