History
Rick Astley (Richard Paul Astley, born 6 February 1966 in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England) started out as a drummer in the soul band FBI before working as a tea boy and apprentice for the production trio Stock Aitken Waterman. Signed to their label, he became a star of the late-1980s Hi-NRG dance-pop sound. His 1987 debut album Whenever You Need Somebody sold around 15 million copies and produced hits including "Never Gonna Give You Up," "Together Forever" and "It Would Take a Strong Strong Man." "Never Gonna Give You Up" topped the charts in 25 countries and won Best British Single at the 1988 Brit Awards. Astley moved toward a more soulful sound on his 1991 album Free and stepped back from recording at 27, later returning to music in the 2000s. His biggest piece of trivia: in 2007 the song's video became the basis of "rickrolling," an internet prank where disguised links redirect to the clip. The meme exploded in 2008 when YouTube redirected its entire homepage to the video, and by 2025 the song had passed one billion streams on Spotify.
