History

Richard Chartier is an American sound artist from the Washington, D.C. area and one of the key figures of lowercase, a strand of minimal electronic music built from extremely quiet, sparse sounds. His works are made of thin sine tones, faint clicks, near-silent hums and long pauses, arranged with the precision of visual design, a field he also worked in. The music asks for close, attentive listening, often on headphones, since much of it sits at the edge of audibility and changes only slightly over long durations. His albums came out through labels at the centre of the microsound scene, including 12k, and he has long run LINE, an imprint devoted to minimal and conceptual sound work. He has also collaborated with artists such as Taylor Deupree and made installations for gallery spaces. His pieces are recognisable by their restraint: clean digital tones, careful placement of each small event and a sense that the silence between sounds matters as much as the sounds themselves.
