History
Rex Orange County built a catalogue out of chords that belong to jazz and a delivery that belongs to someone talking to himself. The voice is untrained in a deliberate way, thin at the top and prone to cracking, and the arrangements make space for that instead of covering it: piano or nylon-string guitar, brushed drums, a horn or a string line arriving late. Best Friend and Sunflower come from the early run, written and largely played alone, with the tape hiss and the awkward edits left in. Loving Is Easy is the brightest thing he has done, a duet with a light bossa lilt that hides how carefully the chord movement is put together. By the later albums the production had grown, with real string sections and a fuller band, but the writing kept the same habit of saying an ordinary thing plainly and letting a strange chord underneath do the emotional work. An appearance on a Tyler, The Creator album brought the early songs a far wider audience.
