History

Return to Forever was Chick Corea's band, and it lived through two very different sounds. It began in the early 1970s as a light, Latin-flavoured group with singer Flora Purim, percussionist Airto Moreira, reed player Joe Farrell and bassist Stanley Clarke, playing airy songs built on Corea's electric piano. Then Corea and Clarke rebuilt it as a loud electric jazz-rock quartet with drummer Lenny White. Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, from 1973, introduced the heavier approach, and Where Have I Known You Before, from 1974, brought in the young guitarist Al Di Meola, whose rapid picking fitted the band's appetite for speed. Romantic Warrior, from 1976, is the album most associated with them, with medieval themes, knotty composed passages and long virtuoso sections that owe as much to progressive rock as to jazz. Clarke's bass, played up front as a lead instrument, became a model for fusion bassists. The hallmarks are Corea's bright, Spanish-tinged melodies, unison runs at blinding tempos and a sense of fusion as grand composition.
