History
Rednex are a Swedish Eurodance project formed in 1994 in Stockholm by producers Janne Ericsson, Örjan "Öban" Öberg and Pat Reiniz (Patrick Edenberg). They fused Eurodance beats with American folk instrumentation, banjo, fiddle, square-dance energy, into a novelty "electronic country" sound. Their debut single "Cotton Eye Joe" (1994), a dance reworking of the traditional "Cotton-Eyed Joe," with vocals by Annika Ljungberg and Göran Danielsson, hit number one in at least eleven countries and reached the US Billboard Hot 100. It anchored their debut album Sex & Violins (1995), followed by further hits "Old Pop in an Oak" and "Wish You Were Here." A genuinely wild bit of trivia: the touring "band" was originally played by hired performers with fake hillbilly names and a fabricated backstory claiming they were inbred villagers discovered in rural Idaho, a hoax a Swedish newspaper exposed in 1995. The lineup has changed repeatedly since, with the group touring under varying members and briefly announcing a dissolution in 2012.
