History

Red Velvet work two modes at once, and the name says which is which. The red side is bright, hook-dense pop: Red Flavor is the clearest case, a summer single that moves in short snapping phrases and barely pauses for breath. The velvet side is slower and darker in colour, closer to R&B, with lush stacked harmony instead of a single lead line. Psycho sits there, built on a sparse beat and a chorus that resolves somewhere other than the expected place. Bad Boy is the other reference point, low and unhurried, with the bass carrying most of the weight. The group has five members and the arrangements treat them as a block: parts hand off quickly, and the harmony is usually the hook rather than an ornament under it. Coming out of the Seoul agency system in the middle of the 2010s, they became the act producers turned to with songs too odd for the mainstream, which is why the catalogue swings between chart pop and chord changes borrowed from jazz.
