History

Reba McEntire came to country from the rodeo circuit in Oklahoma, singing at events long before she sang on records, and something of that directness stayed in the phrasing. Her early work was hard country. Through the late 1980s and the 1990s the productions grew, the staging turned theatrical, and the songs moved toward the three-act narrative she handles best. Fancy, taken from Bobbie Gentry, is the clearest case: a story sung in character, with a hard ending and no apology anywhere in it. The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia works the same way. Does He Love You is a duet built as an argument between two women who share the same man. Twenty-five country number ones and sales past 75 million place her among the largest acts the format has produced, and a parallel career in television and on Broadway carried the audience well beyond it. The voice is bright and high, cutting through a mix without force, with a catch at the ends of lines that reads as anger as often as grief.
