History
The Ramones reduced rock to what could be played at speed and remembered instantly: two or three chords hammered in downstrokes, no solos worth the name, a count of one two three four instead of an intro, and songs that were often over before the second minute. They came out of Queens and made their name at CBGB in the mid 1970s, in matching leather jackets and torn jeans, all of them using the same adopted surname so the band read as one unit rather than four players. Under the noise the writing is pop: Blitzkrieg Bop, Sheena Is a Punk Rocker and I Wanna Be Sedated carry melodies that would sit comfortably on a 1960s girl group record, which is roughly where the group took them from. Their early London shows are usually named as the spark that told British musicians the bar for starting a band was low. Recognition came late, with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2011.
