History
Rafael Anton Irisarri turns electric guitar into weather: slow walls of processed, heavily reverberated sound that roll in like fog and carry a quiet sense of loss. Working in the United States, he became one of the defining voices of 2010s ambient guitar drone, and his records pair beauty with a steady undertow of distortion and tape grain. The North Bend (2010) is named after a place in the Pacific Northwest and feels like it, all grey light and distance. A Fragile Geography (2015) grew heavier and more turbulent, while Solastalgia (2019) takes its title from the word for distress caused by environmental change and treats the climate crisis as its subject. Alongside his own name he has recorded as The Sight Below, a project that fused shoegaze haze with muted techno pulses, and he works as a mastering engineer for many peers in experimental music. A listener recognises him by the swell of guitar that never quite resolves, the saturated low end and the mood of mourning held at a distance.
