History

Propaganda is a Russian all-female pop group formed in Moscow in September 2001 by producer Sergei Izotov, originally with Viktoria Voronina, Viktoria Petrenko, and Yulia Garanina. Their debut single "Melom" ("With Chalk") broke on Europa Plus radio, and the group's first album, "Detki" (Kids), was released in February 2002. Voronina wrote most of the early catalogue before leaving in 2010; the lineup has been rebuilt many times since, with over a dozen singers cycling through over two decades, and Sergei Ivanov has produced the group since 2007. The band's sound shifted from rap-inflected teen pop and house to synth-pop, scoring hits like "Kto" ("Who"), "5 minut na lyubov," "Super Detka," "Quanto Costa," and "Podruga," and picking up several Zolotoy Grammofon awards in the mid-2000s. One notable footnote: a 2008 remix of "Melom" spent over 300 days in an online Top 100 chart of most-downloaded remixes, and a 2019 court ruling, after a seven-year dispute, barred founding member Voronina from performing the group's songs live. Propaganda remains active today under a new lineup.
