History

Portugal. The Man spent about a decade as a psychedelic rock band with a devoted following and no hits, then wrote one that went everywhere. The group formed in Alaska and moved to Portland, and the early albums were dense, restless and full of falsetto, changing shape from record to record at a work rate closer to a touring punk band than to a radio act. Evil Friends sharpened the songwriting and Modern Jesus showed the sound getting leaner. Feel It Still is the one that broke through: a bassline that walks like a sixties soul single, a falsetto hook and a lyric with more edge than its lightness suggests, and it won a Grammy in 2018. Live in the Moment kept the same brightness without repeating the trick. John Gourley's high register is the constant across all of it, sitting slightly nasal above arrangements that keep adding layers. The band is recognised by that voice and by a habit of never staying inside one genre for long.
