History
Poppy crosses bubblegum pop with metal and industrial noise, switching between a sweet, doll-like voice and full screams inside a single song. She first drew attention in the mid-2010s through a series of strange, deadpan YouTube videos made with Titanic Sinclair, where the character of Poppy was part pop star, part unsettling art project. Am I a Girl? (2018) began to break that persona open, with heavy guitars cutting into glossy synth pop on tracks such as X. I Disagree (2020), released on Sumerian Records, made the turn complete: nu-metal riffs, industrial textures and pop hooks stacked together, and its single BLOODMONEY earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. Later work, including Negative Spaces (2024) and her collaboration with the hardcore band Knocked Loose, confirmed her place in heavy music. Listeners recognise Poppy by the whiplash between cute and brutal and by a vocal range that moves from airy pop to a raw scream without warning.
