History

Two men from Moscow decided that Russian pop could be sung entirely in English, and then spent twenty years proving the point. Roman Chernitsyn and Maxim Postelny worked through the 1990s under the name Slow Motion before becoming Plazma at the end of the decade. "Take My Love" broke in 2000 and travelled across the whole former Soviet radio market; "The Sweetest Surrender" followed. The construction is deliberately retro: programmed drums, warm synth pads, a chorus that arrives early and keeps coming back, everything modelled on late-1980s European synth-pop rather than on whatever was playing next to them. Chernitsyn sings high and clean, almost boyish, and most listeners recognise that timbre before they recognise the song. Postelny handles keyboards and production. The English lyrics are simple by design, written for singability rather than for meaning, and the duo has never treated that as a compromise.
