History
Philipp Gorbachev is a Moscow producer and performer whose music mixes techno and house with avant-garde dance music and the jagged edges of post-punk, so his shows often feel more like a live band than a DJ set. He grew up as the Soviet Union came apart and Russian rave culture took shape in the 1990s, and he has recalled being taken as a child to see Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, David Bowie and Einstürzende Neubauten. His debut «Silver Album» came out in 2014 on Cómeme, the Berlin label run by Matias Aguayo, with Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers involved as producer. In 2016 he released «Unlock the Box» on his own imprint, PG Tunes, and in 2017 he formed The Naked Man, a band assembled with strangers found through Craigslist. He has been closely tied to Arma17, the Moscow techno club and collective that repeatedly lost its venues to closures. Gorbachev is recognisable by shouted, theatrical vocals over rubbery electronic grooves, with humour and menace sharing the same track.
