History

Phil Collins is a drummer who became a singer, and both halves are audible in everything he released. He joined Genesis behind the kit and took the microphone when Peter Gabriel left, then ran a solo career alongside the band right through the eighties. Face Value opens with In the Air Tonight, a song built on restraint: a drum machine, a brooding vocal, and then the fill that arrives after three minutes of waiting, drenched in the gated reverb he and his engineers helped popularise. His other instinct is soul. He grew up on Motown and Stax, and the horn charts, the backbeat and the phrasing on his uptempo material come straight from there. Against All Odds is the ballad voice at full stretch, cracking at the top, and Another Day in Paradise put a social lyric into daytime radio. On the day of Live Aid he played both London and Philadelphia. The identifying combination is that hoarse, conversational tenor set against drums mixed far louder than pop convention allowed.
