History
Perkele play melodic Oi! with a Scandinavian polish: big shouted choruses, rolling mid-tempo rhythms and guitar lines that lean towards classic street punk and rock and roll. The band comes from Gothenburg in Sweden and took its name from a Finnish curse word, a nod to the rough humour that runs through the scene. Formed in the 1990s, they became one of the best-known Oi! acts outside Britain in the 2000s, touring widely in Europe and building a loyal following among skinheads and punks who liked their music loud but tuneful. Albums like No Shame from 2002 set the template, and later records such as Längtan in 2008 and Forever in 2010 pushed the melodies further, with songs sung mostly in English and some in Swedish. Their lyrics stay close to the genre's core themes of friendship, loyalty, working life and holding together as a group. Listeners recognise Perkele by their anthemic, almost arena-sized choruses and the warm, slightly melancholic melodies that sit under the gruff vocals.
