History
Percival Schuttenbach is the metal side of a Polish band from Lubin that grew out of historical reenactment and built its sound on Slavic and early medieval music. The name comes from a gnome in Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher novels, and the group, founded in 1999, works in two modes: as Percival, an acoustic folk ensemble, and as Percival Schuttenbach, where the same material gets heavy guitars and drums. The instruments set them apart: long-necked lutes, Byzantine lyra, flutes, frame drums and davul, played alongside electric guitars. Oj Dido shows the metal approach, while the Slava! series, which covers the songs of the Southern, Eastern and later Western Slavs, is a careful survey of traditional material from across the region. The band reached a much wider audience through its contribution to the soundtrack of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which carried their vocals and old instruments far beyond folk circles. A listener recognises them by the raw, open-throated female singing, the droning string instruments and melodies drawn from real Slavic folk songs rather than invented fantasy themes.
