History

Pedro Iturralde was a saxophonist who, in the 1960s, set flamenco forms against modern jazz harmony and improvisation, and his Jazz Flamenco records are counted among the first serious attempts at that fusion. He was born in Navarre, trained as a classical musician and worked for years in Madrid as a jazz player and teacher of saxophone at the Madrid conservatory. On Jazz Flamenco and its sequel he worked with a quintet and a very young Paco de Lucía on guitar, credited then as Paco de Algeciras, taking soleá, bulerías and popular Spanish tunes into a cool, modal jazz setting. The project was presented at the Berlin Jazz Festival and drew attention abroad at a time when Spanish jazz had little international presence. He also composed for the saxophone repertoire, and his Pequeña Czarda is still played by saxophone students worldwide. A listener recognises Iturralde by the smooth, lyrical alto and tenor tone, Phrygian melodies lifted from flamenco and a calm, unhurried swing.
