History

Pauline Oliveros built her music on listening itself: slow tones held until they bloom in the room, accordion drones, voices and trombones answering each other inside long natural reverberation. She was an American composer and accordionist who came through the experimental scene of the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the 1960s, working with tape, electronics and improvisation, and later taught at universities while developing her Sonic Meditations, pieces written as instructions for attention rather than notes. That practice grew into what she called Deep Listening. The album Deep Listening was recorded in 1988 with Stuart Dempster and Panaiotis in a huge empty underground cistern at Fort Worden in Washington State, where every sound hangs in the air for around 45 seconds. The cistern became part of the instrument, and the record became a touchstone for drone, cave and resonant-space ambient. A listener recognises her work by the patience, the enormous reverb tails and the feeling that the space is playing along.
