History

Patricia Kaas sings chanson in a low register, and that is the first thing anyone notices: a smoky contralto with a grain in it, closer to a blues singer than to the light soprano the French tradition had been leaning on. She grew up in Lorraine, near the German border, in a mining region, and started singing in clubs there as a teenager, working in German as well as French. Mademoiselle chante le blues announced the formula in 1987, chanson structure and phrasing carried by cabaret piano, brushed drums and a saxophone, with the delivery kept restrained rather than dramatic. Mon mec à moi turned that into her best known song. Outside France the reception was unusual: she built a large audience in Germany, Russia and Eastern Europe, touring there consistently through the 1990s when few Western singers did, and Russian listeners still treat her as part of the decade's soundtrack. She is recognised by that dark timbre, the cabaret arrangements behind it, and a habit of underplaying rather than pushing.
