History

Pat Green made Texas country sound like a party that happened to have good songs at its centre: loose, rowdy, singalong records built for college bars and outdoor stages. He started playing around Lubbock while a student at Texas Tech in the 1990s and, like Robert Earl Keen and Jerry Jeff Walker before him, grew an audience through relentless touring rather than radio. His independent records and live shows turned him into one of the central names of the late-1990s Texas music boom, alongside friend and collaborator Cory Morrow. Three Days in 2001 was his major-label debut and brought that regional following to Nashville. The title track of Wave on Wave in 2003 became his biggest national hit, a big, windswept ballad that showed he could write beyond the beer-hall anthems. Lucky Ones followed in 2004. His sound mixes heartland rock drive with fiddle and acoustic guitar, and his reputation rests as much on the shows as on the records, where the rowdy Texas crowd sings along to every chorus.
