History
Parkway Drive came out of Byron Bay, a surf town on the Australian coast, and spent their first decade playing metalcore at its most physical: down tuned riffs cut into short blocks, breakdowns placed like punctuation, and Winston McCall shouting rather than screaming, low and articulate enough that the words stay legible. Killing with a Smile and Horizons made them the reference point for Australian heavy music, and Atlas widened the palette with orchestral parts and longer arrangements. The turn came with Ire in 2015, when they moved away from breakdown driven writing towards something closer to arena metal: melodic lead guitar, clean choruses, strings and choirs, songs built for a headline slot rather than a pit. That gamble is what put them on the main stages of the big European festivals, with pyrotechnics as part of the set. A listener recognises them by McCall's dry, barked delivery and by the way a heavy verse usually resolves into a melody built to be sung back by thousands of people.
