History
Pallbearer brought an unusual amount of melody and feeling to doom metal: slow, massive riffs carrying long, harmonised guitar lines and clean, mournful vocals rather than growls. The band formed in Little Rock, Arkansas, in the late 2000s, and their debut Sorrow and Extinction, released in 2012 on Profound Lore Records, drew attention well beyond the doom underground for the way it made crushing heaviness sound tender and grief-stricken. Foundations of Burden followed in 2014, with longer, more intricate songs and sharper production, and Heartless in 2017 pushed further towards progressive rock and classic heavy metal, with more varied tempos and bigger vocal harmonies. Their roots lie in epic and traditional doom, bands that valued songwriting and atmosphere over sheer volume, but they filtered that through a more modern, emotional sensibility. Songs often stretch past ten minutes and build slowly towards cathartic peaks. Listeners recognise them by soaring twin-guitar melodies, a sorrowful clean voice and the sense of a heavy band writing ballads at a funeral pace.
