History

Pablo Fierro is a DJ and producer from the Canary Islands and one of the longer-serving figures in European Afro house. His music draws on a wide spread of sources, Arabic, West African, Latin American and Caribbean, and folds them into driving, percussive house built around live instrumentation, chanted vocals and hypnotic, circular melodies. Early releases such as Djambo in 2013 already show the approach: hand drums and polyrhythms carrying the track, with synths kept in a supporting role. Later work keeps pointing back to his home ground, as on Timanfaya / Baobab / Kalaa, which takes its first title from the volcanic national park on Lanzarote. He runs Vida Records, a label he uses both for his own music and to put out emerging Afro house producers, and he talks about the genre less as a style than as a way of life. In the scene he is regarded as one of the people who kept Afro house growing in Europe before its recent boom. His sets are recognisable by their energy: heavy on percussion, warm, and closer to a ritual than a showcase.
