History

Pablo Cruise played bright, breezy California rock with a jazz-rock backbone: interlocking keyboards and guitar, easy mid-tempo grooves and harmony vocals that suggested open water and long summers. The band came together in San Francisco in 1973 from former members of Stoneground and It's a Beautiful Day, with Cory Lerios on keyboards, David Jenkins on guitar, Steve Price on drums and Bud Cockrell on bass. Signed to A&M, they released their debut in 1975 and built a following as a strong live act before breaking through with A Place in the Sun in 1977, whose single "Whatcha Gonna Do?" reached the top ten. Worlds Away followed in 1978 with "Love Will Find a Way", another top-ten hit and probably the song most associated with the name. Instrumental passages and extended soloing gave the records more musical muscle than much of the soft rock around them. In the early 1980s the band moved toward a synth-heavy pop keyboard sound and scored again with "Cool Love". The group split in the mid-1980s and later reformed with three of its original members.
