History
Ophidian is the alias of Conrad Hoyer, a producer from Arnhem in the Netherlands who became known for pairing bit-crushed hardcore kicks with carefully written piano and melodic lines. He started taking piano lessons as a child and was recording his own tracks in the early 1990s. As a teenager he was picked up by DJ Ruffneck's circle, and in 2001 he joined Enzyme Records, where he settled on a slower, darker style of hardcore that drew on techno and wider electronic music. Enzyme's experimental offshoot gave that sound room to breathe, and releases such as Blackbox and Betrayed by Daylight became reference points for the industrial side of the Dutch scene. Later he and Ruffneck started further labels for hard techno and experimental hardcore. Ophidian also wrote tracks that crossed over to bigger hardcore stages, some of them together with Ruffneck. The kicks grind and distort, yet the melodies above them sound as if they were written at a piano rather than simply programmed.
