History
Operation Ivy fused fast, raw hardcore punk with ska upstrokes and a strong sense of community, and in barely two years laid down a template that much of 1990s ska punk would follow. The band formed in 1987 in the East Bay of California, with singer Jesse Michaels, guitarist Tim Armstrong, bassist Matt Freeman and drummer Dave Mello, and became central to the scene around the all-ages 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley. They released the Hectic EP in 1988 and their only album, Energy, in 1989 on Lookout! Records, then broke up the same year. Songs such as Sound System, Knowledge and Unity turned into scene anthems, with lyrics about unity, conformity and personal responsibility shouted over switchbacks between punk speed and skanking offbeats. Armstrong and Freeman later formed Rancid, and Green Day covered Knowledge, which helped keep the band's name alive. Listeners recognise Operation Ivy by Freeman's busy, melodic bass, Michaels' hoarse gang-vocal energy, and the sudden drops from hardcore charge into loose ska rhythm.
