History
Omni Trio was the drum and bass name of Robert Haigh, and despite the name it was essentially one person. Haigh had spent the 1980s making experimental ambient records and working around the post-punk and industrial underground, and he brought that background into jungle when he started releasing on Moving Shadow in 1993. The result was a style often called ambient drum and bass: intricate, rolling breakbeat edits under sweet, melancholy piano vamps, orchestral washes and sampled soul-diva vocals. Tracks like Renegade Snares, Mystic Stepper and Thru the Vibe became anthems of the old-school era and were collected on the first album, The Deepest Cut Vol. 1. Haunted Science followed in 1996, and later albums went further into Detroit techno colours and reflective moods, even as club drum and bass moved toward harder, darker sounds. Haigh eventually returned to solo piano and ambient work under his own name. Every Omni Trio track rests on the same contrast: frantic, finely chopped drums set against a calm, almost nostalgic melody.
