History
Om Unit is the alias of Jim Coles, an English producer whose music sits where drum and bass, dubstep, hip-hop and Chicago footwork meet. Before Om Unit he worked in the 2000s as a hip-hop producer under the name 2Tall, and that background still shows in his ear for heavy, swung drums and sampled texture. Around 2011 he started the Cosmic Bridge label and released a run of EPs and the album Threads on Civil Music, records that took the stuttering 160 bpm rhythms of footwork and set them against half-time bass weight, jungle breaks and dubby, spacious atmospheres. The approach made him one of the key names in the short-lived footwork jungle crossover of the early 2010s, working alongside Machinedrum on the Dream Continuum project. In 2014 he released Inversions on Goldie's Metalheadz, a move that placed him firmly inside drum and bass. Since then, based in Bristol, he has continued on Cosmic Bridge with albums and the Acid Dub Studies series. His tracks are recognisable by deep sub bass, chopped breaks and a patient, hypnotic pace.
