History

A songwriter first, a performer second. Gazmanov's name reached Soviet listeners in 1988 through Lyusi, a hit sung by his young son Rodion, and only afterwards did he step out front himself. Esaul, at the turn of the 1990s, set the formula he has worked ever since: Cossack and officer imagery, a marching tempo you can stamp to, brass over bright synth lines, and a clipped declamatory delivery that lands closer to a parade command than to crooning. Moi mysli, moi skakuny and Gospoda ofitsery took the same road, while Zagulyal and Moryachka showed the dance-floor side of the same voice. Through the 1990s he was a fixture of Russian television galas, where the numbers were staged with flags, uniforms and choreography, and where he sang on the move, jumping and tumbling rather than standing at the microphone. Born in 1951 in the Kaliningrad region, he has kept both the repertoire and the delivery close to unchanged for three decades.
