History
Official HIGE DANdism are a four piece band whose songs are carried by piano rather than guitar, which is unusual enough in Japanese rock to count as a signature on its own. The frontman sings high and moves into falsetto without a visible seam, and the writing puts more chord changes into a pop chorus than the form normally tolerates, borrowing turnarounds from gospel and funk and then resolving them like pop. Pretender is the song that made the band a household name in Japan, a break up song that keeps its composure while the harmony underneath keeps sliding away. Subtitle and Mixed Nuts came through television, where the group has become one of the most reliable sources of theme songs, and both carry the same trick: a melody plain enough to stick on one listen sitting on an arrangement that rewards ten. Live, the band plays it straight, no spectacle, everything pushed into the playing.
