History
O-Zone are a Moldovan Eurodance and boy-band act formed in Chișinău in 1999, originally as a duo of Dan Bălan and Petru Jelihovschi. After Jelihovschi's departure, Bălan held open auditions and recruited Arsenie "Arsenium" Todiraș, who won him over with a rendition of Elvis Presley's "Love Me Tender," and then Radu Sîrbu, completing the trio. In 2002 the group relocated to Bucharest, Romania, chasing wider exposure, and broke through with "Despre Tine," which topped the Romanian Top 100 for three weeks in 2003. Their real breakthrough came with "Dragostea din tei" from the 2003 album DiscO-Zone: after an Italian cover by Haiducii sparked interest in the original, the song topped charts in roughly a dozen European countries and reached number 3 in the UK, though it never entered the US Billboard Hot 100. It became an unlikely American phenomenon anyway, thanks to Gary Brolsma's viral "Numa Numa" lip-sync video, and was later sampled in T.I. and Rihanna's chart-topping "Live Your Life." Worldwide sales of the single passed 12 million copies. O-Zone disbanded in January 2005, reuniting briefly for shows in 2017 and 2019.
