History

North Mississippi Allstars took the droning trance of hill country blues and played it as a loud, loose rock band. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson, sons of the Memphis producer and musician Jim Dickinson, grew up near Hernando, Mississippi, close enough to hear R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough at first hand, and formed the group in the late 1990s with bassist Chris Chew. Luther plays slide and lead guitar, Cody drums and adds other instruments, and Chew's deep gospel-trained bass anchors the groove. Their debut Shake Hands with Shorty (2000) was built largely from songs by Burnside, Fred McDowell and other hill country players, and it earned a Grammy nomination for contemporary blues. 51 Phantom (2001) and Electric Blue Watermelon (2005) moved toward their own writing, Southern rock, jam grooves and a little hip hop. They became one of the main bridges between the old juke joint players and festival crowds. The band is recognised by long, hypnotic one-chord jams, fat slide riffs, heavy tom-driven drumming and a party feel inherited from the house parties of the hill country.
