History
NOFX play fast melodic punk with the bass mixed up where you can hear every note of it, and with a lyrical habit of putting a joke and a political argument in the same verse. They formed in Los Angeles and spent years playing hardcore shows before the songwriting turned melodic, and they never signed to a major label, releasing instead through the bassist's own Fat Wreck Chords, which became the centre of a whole scene. Punk in Drublic is the record that sold on word of mouth alone, with no radio play and no video rotation. Linoleum is the band in three minutes: a bass intro, a fast chorus and a set of lyrics about having nothing that refuses to feel sorry about it. Bob is the comic end, a character sketch delivered at speed. The Decline goes the other way entirely, eighteen minutes in one track with key changes and horns, a sustained piece of writing from a band whose reputation was built on not taking anything seriously.
