History

Nightwish took metal guitars and an orchestra and refused to treat either as decoration. The band formed in a small town in eastern Finland around keyboard-led compositions, and the writing has always started from the keyboard part rather than a riff, which is why the songs move in long arcs with key changes instead of verse and chorus alone. The first decade was defined by Tarja Turunen, a classically trained soprano singing over double kick drums, a combination that sounded strange in the late nineties and then became a template for an entire genre. Anette Olzon and later Floor Jansen shifted the voice toward rock delivery without dropping the range. Nemo is the compact version of the band, a single built on a piano figure and a slow swell. Wish I Had an Angel is the blunt one, near-industrial in its stomp, with harsh male vocals answering the lead. Ghost Love Score is the ten-minute case for the whole project, orchestra and band trading the theme until the last section.
