History

Nicki Minaj built her reputation on switching, sometimes inside a single bar: a low growl becomes a cartoon squeak, a Queens accent slides into a clipped English one, a rap verse turns into a sung hook without a seam. She came up through New York mixtapes and guest verses, and the guest verse stayed her sharpest form, a short window where she could out-write whoever booked her. On her own records she kept two modes running at once. One is pop, with dance production and a chorus built for radio, and Starships is the plainest version of it. The other is rap at full aggression, dense multisyllable rhyme and a delivery that pushes ahead of the beat. Super Bass sits between them, melodic and light but rapped in triplets fast enough to catch people out. Anaconda took an old West Coast bass line and rebuilt it as a club record around a blunt, comic performance. Her use of alter egos gave her licence to be theatrical, and it shaped how women in rap were allowed to sound after her.
