History

Niall Horan came out of One Direction with the least complicated plan of the five: guitars, verses, choruses, no reinvention. His solo records sit in soft rock and acoustic pop, nearer to 1970s Californian songwriting and late-period Fleetwood Mac than to the chart production his old group worked with. "Slow Hands" is the outlier that pushes hardest, a blues-shaped groove where the bassline does most of the work, while "This Town" and the quieter material lean on one guitar and a voice with an Irish softness in the consonants. He writes in a middle range and rarely climbs above it, which gives the albums an even, unhurried surface. Three records in a row charted at the top end in Britain and the United States, and a coaching seat on a televised singing contest kept him visible to an audience beyond pop radio. A listener recognises him by the acoustic frame, the unforced delivery, and melodies that resolve where they are expected to instead of chasing a surprise.
