History
Nelly Kim Furtado (born December 2, 1978, in Victoria, British Columbia) is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose parents emigrated from São Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal. She broke through with her trip-hop-influenced debut album Whoa, Nelly! (2000), which produced the Billboard Hot 100 top-10 hits "I'm Like a Bird" (a Grammy Award winner for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance) and "Turn Off the Light." Her second album, Folklore (2003), leaned into folk sounds and her Portuguese roots. Furtado's biggest reinvention came with Loose (2006), produced largely with Timbaland: the album sold over 10 million copies and spun off four worldwide number-one singles, "Promiscuous," "Maneater," "Say It Right," and "All Good Things (Come to an End)." She later recorded an entire Spanish-language album, Mi Plan (2009), which won a Latin Grammy, and released The Spirit Indestructible (2012), the independent The Ride (2017), and 7 (2024). Across her catalog she has moved between trip-hop, folk, pop, R&B, and Latin styles, selling more than 45 million records and winning ten Juno Awards plus a Brit Award.
