History

Necromantia stood out in black metal for an unusual line-up: instead of relying on guitar riffs, the band leaned on bass, including a thick eight-string bass, with keyboards and ritual atmosphere filling the space. They came out of Athens at the end of the 1980s and belonged to the first wave of the Greek scene alongside Rotting Christ and Varathron, sharing an early split release with the latter. Where Norwegian bands of the time went for cold speed, the Greek groups favoured mid-tempo, melodic and theatrical music, and Necromantia took that furthest, adding occult storytelling, dark ambience and spoken passages. Crossing the Fiery Path (1993) introduced that heavy, bass-driven ritual sound, and Scarlet Evil Witching Black (1995) pushed its dark, ceremonial side. IV: Malice (2000) carried the approach into a new decade. What gives them away is the low, rumbling bass weight where guitars would normally be, the stately tempos and a mood closer to a black mass than a blizzard.
