History

Natasha Koroleva came out of Kiev and was very young when Zhyoltye tyulpany made her name across the former Soviet Union in 1991. She moved to Moscow early on, and everything after that was made from there. Almost everything she recorded that decade runs through one collaborator: Igor Nikolaev wrote her material and produced it, and the partnership was personal as well as professional. Malenkaya strana, his song, arrived in 1995 and has stayed in her programmes ever since. The arrangements are estrada in the strict sense of the word: orchestral pop with a dance pulse under it, a clean high soprano on top, the melody carried by the voice rather than by the groove. Konfetti belongs to the same run. Songs from those years still turn up in daytime radio rotation, which has outlasted the chart positions they originally took.
