History

Natalie Cole started as a soul singer with a hard edge, a big room voice over horn charts and a rhythm section that pushed, and This Will Be is the clearest evidence: fast, brassy and sung almost entirely at full commitment. Through the seventies and eighties she worked across soul, funk and adult pop, and Miss You Like Crazy showed a slower, smoother side built for radio balladry. The record that changed how she was heard was Unforgettable... with Love, an album of standards from her father's repertoire, arranged for a full orchestra and taken at the tempos of the original era rather than modernised. The title track placed her voice against his old recording, and the effect worked because she sang it as a duet partner rather than an imitator, keeping her own phrasing and her own slightly darker tone. After that she recorded jazz and standards as a main line of work, and the swing in her delivery, light on the beat and very precise with consonants, is what a listener recognises first.
