History
Natalia Lafourcade began in Mexican pop and spent the second half of her career walking back into the Latin American songbook, trading studio gloss for nylon-string guitar, upright bass and a voice recorded close enough to hear the breath. Hasta la Raiz is the pivot point: a mid-tempo song with a hook that keeps circling, built on acoustic guitar and light percussion, and its success made room for the records that followed. Those turned to bolero and the older canciones of Mexico and the wider region, arranged for guitar duo and sung without the vibrato and volume that the repertoire usually attracts. Her roots run through Veracruz and son jarocho, audible in the strumming patterns and in the way melodies sit slightly ahead of the beat. Nunca Es Suficiente shows what happens when that voice is placed over cumbia, small and conversational against a large band. She is the rare Mexican artist equally at home on a pop chart and in a room with two old guitarists and no drums.
