History
Nani Bregvadze sings Soviet estrada the way a chamber singer approaches a song: slow tempos, a piano and a small string group behind her, and almost no pressure in the voice even at the top of a phrase. She came out of the Georgian scene and first reached a wide Soviet audience with the vocal ensemble Orera, then built a solo repertoire that sat between the urban romance and the polished estrada ballad. Snegopad is the recording most listeners know her by, a winter song carried entirely by restraint: the arrangement stays quiet, the melody keeps returning to the same falling phrase, and the drama comes from what she refuses to force. Tbiliso works the other way, a hymn to her city sung with a warmth that made it a standard in Georgia and far beyond it. Her diction is unusually clear in both Russian and Georgian, and she keeps the ornamentation of the romance tradition small, one turn of phrase where a louder singer would add five.
