History

Mysticum are remembered as one of the first Norwegian bands to weld black metal to the drum machine, replacing a human drummer with relentless programmed beats and building a sound that felt closer to industrial music than to rock. Their guitars are thick walls of buzzing tremolo riffs, drenched in distortion and reverb, while the electronic drums hammer away at speeds and volumes no live player would sustain. In the Streams of Inferno, their debut album, came out in the mid-1990s in the middle of the Norwegian second wave and stood apart from it through that mechanical pulse and a psychedelic, almost hypnotic intensity. The band then went silent for many years and returned with Planet Satan, which kept the same approach with heavier, more modern production and a strong visual side in their rare live shows. Their influence reaches the industrial black metal acts that followed, even though their own catalogue is small. A listener recognises them by pounding machine drums, a dense haze of guitar noise, distant shrieked vocals and a trance-like, disorienting atmosphere.
