History
Muslim Magomayev (1942-2008) was a Soviet and Azerbaijani baritone who became one of the most celebrated singers of the USSR, moving fluidly between opera and pop. Born in Baku into an artistic family — his grandfather, also named Muslim Magomayev, was a founding figure of modern Azerbaijani classical music — he studied piano and composition at the Baku Academy of Music and began voice lessons as a teenager. His voice caught the attention of Soviet Culture Minister Yekaterina Furtseva, who invited him to become a soloist; in 1964-1965 he appeared as a visiting artist at La Scala in Milan, then turned down a permanent Bolshoi Theatre post to keep touring and recording pop material. Nicknamed the "Soviet Sinatra," he was unusual for performing repertoire by Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka and other Western artists inside the USSR, and wrote more than twenty songs of his own. He was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1973 and later married mezzo-soprano Tamara Sinyavskaya. Detailed information about his specific studio albums and chart data is scarce online.
