History

Murder by Death build their songs like stories told in a desert saloon: a deep baritone voice, a cello that moans under the guitars, and a mood somewhere between gothic country, indie rock and a Western soundtrack. The band came together in Bloomington, Indiana, in 2000, first as Little Joe Gould, before renaming itself after the 1976 comedy film Murder by Death. Singer and guitarist Adam Turla and cellist Sarah Balliet have been at its core from the start, and the cello is what sets the group apart from other alt-country acts, giving the music a dark, bowed undertow. Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them? is a concept record about the Devil waging war on a small Mexican village, and Red of Tooth and Claw and Good Morning, Magpie continued in the same world of outlaws, whiskey and bad omens. Over the years they moved through independent labels including Vagrant and Bloodshot and kept a loyal touring following. Their sound is often cited whenever people talk about folk noir or murder ballad rock.
