History

Mr. Catra made funk carioca that was loud, filthy and funny at the same time, and he was recognised by the booming laugh he dropped at the start or end of his tracks. He came up in Rio de Janeiro and became one of the defining voices of the proibidão, the unofficial strand of baile funk that circulated on street recordings and dealt openly with sex, favela life and the drug trade, the kind of material radio would not touch. Albums such as Proibidão Liberado in 2004 and Poder da Favela in 2008 captured that side of him, but he was never only a party MC: he moved easily into hip-hop, and in 2012 he released Com Todo Respeito ao Samba, a record that showed his roots in older Brazilian music. Off stage his life became part of the legend, with dozens of children he openly recognised and a conversion to Judaism. He was diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2017 and died in São Paulo in 2018, at 49. His sound is the classic Rio drum machine groove, a gravelly, joking baritone and lyrics that make no attempt to be polite.
