History
Mr. Big joined virtuoso musicianship to radio-ready hard rock and soft-focus ballads. The band formed in Los Angeles in the late 1980s around bassist Billy Sheehan and guitarist Paul Gilbert, two players already known for extreme technique, with Eric Martin on vocals and Pat Torpey on drums. The debut album showed off the chops, and Lean Into It in 1991 balanced them with songs. It opened with Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy, famous for Gilbert and Sheehan playing with electric drills against their strings, and it also carried To Be with You, an acoustic, sing-along ballad that became a number one hit in the United States. The band was even bigger in Japan, where it kept a strong following long after American rock moved on to grunge. Mr. Big's sound is easy to pick out: fast unison lines between guitar and bass, tight harmony vocals, Martin's soulful rasp, and a split personality between shred workouts and warm acoustic pop.
