History

Motor City Drum Ensemble is the alias of Danilo Plessow, a producer and DJ from Stuttgart whose name openly salutes Detroit. He emerged in the late 2000s with the Raw Cuts series, a run of short, rough house tracks built from chopped soul and jazz samples, swinging drum-machine patterns and bass lines that sound as if they were lifted from worn vinyl. The records stood out at a time when much house music was polished and minimal: they were dusty, loose and warm, closer to the sampler-driven work of Detroit producers such as Theo Parrish and Moodymann than to the German club sound around him. As a DJ Plessow became known for long sets that move between deep house, disco, boogie, jazz and funk, a range he documented on his 2011 instalment of the DJ-Kicks mix series. That digging habit feeds his productions too: the grooves feel played rather than programmed, with shuffle in the hats and chords that drift slightly off the grid. A listener recognises Motor City Drum Ensemble by the crackle, the heavy swing and the sense of a record collection being cut up and looped late at night.
